Spread the love
Tim and I on the Beach

Hey all! In my last post I had mentioned that Tim had to be in Virginia for a business trip and we were taking the RV on her maiden voyage. Well we stayed at this awesome KOA campground in Cape Charles Virginia. Let me tell you, it was quite the adventure getting there.

I’m not sure how many of you have ever driven a motorhome before. For those of you who don’t know, they are not fun to drive on a really windy day. It’s like driving a billboard down the highway, the wind pushes you every which way and the big trucks that come up along the side of you push you over and then suck you in. Can you say scary?!

The Sun Before The Storm

As we were moseying along to our destination a rain storm rolled in and with it came the winds. Just in time for us to cross the 17.8 mile long Chesapeake Bay Tunnel/Bridge. Let me tell you, I would have totally been freaked out going into a tunnel that literally goes under the water in the middle of the Bay, however there was no time for that because I was too afraid that the wind was going to blow us off the bridge to our death. The wind was so bad TIm had to hold on to the steering wheel with everything he had! And believe it or not, we could not wait for the bridge to turn into the tunnel just to get out of the wind.

Lucky for us we made it safe and sound on to Cape Charles. Instead of trying to get into the campground a day early (we were ahead of schedule) we stopped at the truck stop just after you get off the bridge for the night.

Our First Night At The KOA

Check in at the KOA was quick and easy. The campground was beautiful, the weather not so much. As you can see in the above picture the awning isn’t out and Tim is in a coat. Unfortunately it was pretty windy and chilly at night but we did get lucky enough to have the rain stop.

The Jackspot

Our first trip out was in the middle of a global pandemic so we didn’t really get to enjoy everything to the fullest but I fully endorse this campground. They have everything on site that you could need. The location is perfect and I’d love to go back when things are back to normal. The restaurant was open for lunch and dinner on a limited schedule and had spaced out outdoor seating.

Relaxing On The Beach

There is a private beach here at the campground.

Hello Mr. Crab

There are a ton of these little guys along the beach. Watching them dig out there little holes in the sand and drag food in kept me entertained for a while.

Let’s Go Fishin’

If watching Mr. Crab isn’t enough to keep you busy, you can always bring the fishing gear and give that a go.

Campground Pool

If it was just a little warmer out, I would have jumped into the fabulous heated pool here at the campground.

Luxury Tent

No worries if you don’t have your own camper or motorhome, it isn’t needed. They not only have campers on site that you can rent, they have a motel and these freakin awesome tents!

Beautiful Colors From The Sunset

If you come here for nothing else, head to the Cape Charles KOA for these sunsets. The colors of the night sky were amazing. This one was taken from our campsite but the view from the beach is unbeatable.

We are not affiliates for the KOA, I just wanted to share what a great campground this is and share our maiden voyage with the RedHawk. Until next time, travel and fall in love, adventure awaits ❤️

  1. Sounds like a successful maiden voyage! I haven’t been to this KOA, but we went to Cape Charles last year. We stayed at Cherrystone campground. It is a really nice one too if you ever want to check it out.

    1. Hi Darla! We had a great maiden voyage, even with the scary windy drive over that huge bridge! The KOA was great, it was clean and had nice amenities. If you’re looking to stay at a KOA then you should definitely check it out if you’re in the area. If we ever get back to Cape Charles I will most definitely look into Cherrystone, Thanks for the recommendation.

  2. Sounds like you made the best of the pandemic and not so perfect weather. We would love to try RVing at some point… its a little daunting!

    1. Hi Marianne! It can be a little scary sometimes but we love our little house on wheels. There’s just something about being able to travel in your own personal homey space and being totally self contained. I’m not what you’d call an outdoorsy person at all, I hate bugs, I need running water, I like luxury. In our RV I have everything that I have in our brick and mortar home including the running water. I can take a hot shower whenever I want, have a working tv and with technology we have internet too. RVing is definitely worth a try.

  3. You’ll quickly learn that RVing isn’t for the faint of heart and you get good at adjusting and sometimes changing plans! Glad your first trip was successful. We find that most KOAs are pretty dependable campgrounds. Safe travels!

    1. Hi Robin!, This is so true, RVing is definitely something that you have to have nerves of steel for. When those big trucks come rolling by you for the first time blowing you off the road it’s nuts! But once you get used to it and know what to expect it’s a great adventure. This is actually our 2nd RV. Our first was a much larger, much older model that we bought when our kids were young off the side of a road and we were in our 20’s. First trip we took, tire blew ripping out the gray water tank and fuel tank fill hose. It was a nightmare and the motorhome was sold shortly after our return. Being much older and wiser we did our homework and took forever to find the perfect one for us this go around.

    1. Hi Jenna! Those tents were SUPER cool. Glamping at it’s finest. The rain and wind storm driving over that long bridge was definitely scary but the trip was a great learning experience and we love our new little house on wheels.

    1. I love going out in the RV but I’m also not the one driving. We did buy the smaller size so that I could learn how to handle it myself and feel comfortable but I’m just not ready for that yet, especially after our first trip out with her. I think the best advice I could give you would be to rent before you buy. Make sure you are comfortable driving something so monstrous and that the size (camping wise) is big enough to meet your needs. Nothing worse than dumping a huge amount of money into something that you hate using either because it’s too small to be comfortable on the inside or too big to comfortably handle driving wise.
